First Visitors, and Liam turns TWO!

Our bestest friends, the Bigelows from Berkeley, came to see us! They were our very first visitors and it was SOOO good to see them! Their daughter, Lucy, was Liam's little girlfriend and he has been talking about her non-stop ever since we moved. You can imagine the joyous reunion that took placed when they arrived. We had SUCH a good time together!

Beach Day!

Well, because a planned trip to Utah would be separating us for Liam's upcoming birthday, we decided to celebrate early.  Liam found this totally sad bike at a thrift store while I was furniture shopping weeks before his birthday.  He jumped on it and rode it up and down the aisle, over and over. The very sight of it was depressing...and there was no way I was going to have that thing in my backyard. But he was SO excited about it, and it was just his size, and it's everything his little boy heart loves. So I caved and bought the disgusting thing with plans to fix it up and surprise him for his birthday. Getting the bike out of the store without him knowing was a bit hilarious because I had to get the help of some staff to hide it etc. How pathetic did I look standing in the middle of a dirty thrift store, and asking the staff to help me sneak it this nasty bike for my son's birthday! How hilarious! Oh well. It was worth it. I knew it would be when I pulled him off the bike in the store and he literally bawled on my shoulder for 10 minutes. With a little work it actually cleaned up quite nicely. We just removed the old stickers, sprayed it with weather proof spray paint, and re-painted some of the details.

...Before...

After!

Here's the birthday boy on his birthday morning eating a kinder egg for breakfast (hollow chocolate egg with small toy inside...illegal in U.S. because of choking hazard issues...come on U.S...lighten up a little:) He also got that firetruck you see behind him, full of sidewalk chalk and jelly beans.

So that afternoon we decided to go for a hike in Lynn Canyon just North of us.  Our friends were still here so we got to spend his fake B-Day together! We had heard that they had a suspension bridge and it seemed like a good non-lazy activity (sadly it also turned out to be the hottest day of the year, so we tried very hard not to let each other know that in reality we were all just miserable). The bridge is one of two in the area, the smaller of the two, but the only one that doesn't charge a fee to cross it. Although it was smaller, it was still a little freaky...as you can see from the photos below.

The hike was a little slow going because we decided to let the kiddies walk most of it since it was mostly flat. But apparently the stroll was a little too strenuous for Dan, who thought it a good idea to let Liam carry the backpack. Liam was thrilled by this of course, and walked with this giant bag slapping his calfs for longer than I even wanted to carry it.

All in all, despite the heat, the hike was fun and the company was delightful as always. When we got back, Liam opened the rest of his presents and we had cupcakes. Ben and Sophie got Liam a grover doll that matches Lucy's, we got him the truck...but honestly I think Liam's favorite bit was the cupcakes.

LOVE this face!!

The only thing that could make Liam's birthday any better was....early to bed and a babysitter! Vancouver does this thing called the festival of lights where they invite 3 different countries every year to participate in a fireworks competition. The night we went was Italy, and they did a great job. The fireworks are set off from a barge in English Bay, and everybody throngs the beaches to get a good seat. There were thousands of people out, it was really fun...and our spot wasn't half bad either, although we couldn't hear the synchronized music very well.

The day Ben and Sophie were leaving also happened to be the same day I was flying down to Utah for Andrea's wedding, so we decided to all head down to Seattle together and spend a little time there before everyone parted ways. It was fun to have Ben and Sophie visit us, and as you can see from the pictures Liam and Lucy had probably the best time of all.

Well maybe Liam had more fun with Lucy than Lucy had with him.

Is it just me, or does Liam look a super tough macho boyfriend?

But isn't this the perfect couples picture!
