The 4th of July

We had some seriously big plans for the 4th of July. Specifically...plans for Liam to win his first race ever! Albany was hosting a 4th of July Diaper Derby among other things. It's a crawling contest for babies, split up by age bracket. Liam was in the six to ten month age bracket by just a few days, making him the oldest and most experienced crawler in his bracket. We just knew we had this race in the bag. We even brought a banana to hold at the finish line, as well as a large fan club consisting of our friends from school. But when they blew the whistle, time stood still...or at least it seemed like it. Literally...none of them moved. Half of them sat there and cried. Liam didn't cry, he was just terribly confused by the whole thing. There were tons of people standing around yelling and screaming and shaking objects in their faces...I'd be pretty scared too. After several minutes and a few tries they finally called it an 8 way tie. We were pretty bummed.

Number 381 getting prepped for the big race

This photo was taken at least 45 seconds after the start of the race.

Those other babies only look like they're getting ahead, really their mom's are just pushing them while the babies cry their eyes out (As you can see in the video below...we snagged this from the Albany Patch website). Pretty brutal, especially considering pushing is against the rules.

The highlight of the day was when Dan took second place at the watermelon eating contest, and was awarded a blue ribbon and a dollar bill. Sweet!

Actually, the real highlight of the day was dinner. Dan and I had "the fan club" over for dinner. Dan made pulled pork with a homemade BBQ Sauce that was super tasty, and homemade coleslaw, and I made a quinoa salad. We were very proud of our culinary achievements. That's what we should have taken picture of. All things considered, it was a pretty good holiday, even if Liam didn't win his first race.

That Asian momma was crazy pushy! What was the prize? It couldn't have been worth all that pushing. But oh man that video was AWESOME! Thank you for sharing.

You dinner sounds so YUM! Your culinary skills really have some a long way!
